Curved Sounds (Highlight Delft)

Curved Sounds is an immersive and interactive experience that sonifies Lissajous curves. With a custom surround sound system, this work will move sound and lasers across a room to translate an abstract mathematical concept, Lissajous curves, into an audiovisual experience.

These curves are created by the combination of two sine waves, with the frequencies between them determining the Lissajous curve; simple ratios produce symmetrical patterns, while more complex combinations result in shapes that continuously change direction.

Over time, Curved Sounds moves two sound frequencies and a laser beam across the room in accordance with their Lissajous curve. Revealing the underlying harmony and complexity of mathematical structures, it invites viewers to perceive mathematics not only as an abstract discipline but also as a source of beauty and inspiration.

Developed initially as a research project for Leiden University's Sound Space & Interaction course, Curved Sounds evolved into an audiovisual installation selected for the Highlight Delft festival, merging art and science to immerse audiences in a dynamic experience.
